Class Descriptions

Tots & Folks (18 mos - 3yrs)

This program is specifically designed for children and the folks who accompany them to class. Highly interactive, all students will experience the joy of movement through the exploration of sound, props, music and story telling, stimulating and nurturing their creativity.

Creative Dance (3-4 yrs, 5-6 yrs)

Developed especially for the younger child, these classes encourage inner creativity and individual expression in a spontaneous and joyful atmosphere. Natural movement vocabulary is explored, enhancing inner creativity and body awareness. The 5&6-year-old classes are offered with an option of either Pre-Ballet or Pre-Modern.

Ballet

VDC’s ballet program develops a strong, clean, classical technique focusing on artistry, musicality and purity of line. The instruction addresses the needs of individual students based on sound, anatomical principles and current professional standards. VDC follows the Cechetti syllabus and is pleased to offer exams.

Pointe

Students will work on strengthening exercises to develop the muscles of the feet that are required to support the dancer while on Pointe. Exercises will include floor, barre and centre work. More advanced students will also learn classical variations and repertoire including some partnering work.

Modern/Contemporary

A rich, diverse and unique movement form that supports individual expression while developing a solid technical base. Classes focus on alignment and placement of the body while encouraging freedom of movement, coordination and inner creativity. Improvisation, partnering work, and creative process are skills that are also developed in these classes.

Jazz

Influenced by the techniques of Luigi and Horton, students will explore a variety of styles while developing a solid technical base. Everything from the quick, sharp, isolated movements of traditional Jazz to the more graceful and balletic styles of Lyrical Jazz are Incorporated into these classes.

Jazz Technique

A challenging class recommended for the more advanced students wishing to further their technical ability and take their training to the next level. Pre-approval of the instructor is required.

Jazz Repertoire

This class focuses on the development and learning of choreography. Students in this class must be enrolled in the Jazz Tech class and be dancing at an advanced level. Previous or current training in ballet or modern is strongly recommended.

Hip Hop

Influenced by modern street dance and pop culture, these highly energetic classes allow students to explore movement, rhythm and self-expression through fast-paced choreography. Perfect for increasing dancers’ ability to pick up choreography quickly, or for those looking for a fun cardiovascular workout.

Tap

Encouraging rhythm, musicality and coordination through an emphasis on individual technique and style. Combinations and choreography are taught in a progressive manner and are supported by a challenging and fun atmosphere.

Dance Conditioning

A combination of Pilates and Dowd work (based on the teachings of world renowned dance kinesiologist, Irene Dowd) developed specifically to strengthen dancers’ bodies to prevent injury. This unique combination of the two methods will enhance the dancer’s ability to move safely and provide greater muscle control, core strength and range of motion.

Pilates

These classes focus on the movement system developed by Joseph Pilates. All students will experience the benefits of improved posture, muscular balance, flexibility and overall fitness. Pilates builds strength without excess bulk, creating a sleek toned body.

Performance Companies

A great opportunity for young dancers wishing to enrich their training. Company offers students the chance to work with a variety of Guest choreographers and VDC faculty members in a multitude of dance disciplines. Company members will receive several performance opportunities throughout the year. Auditions are held at the start of the season; students auditioning must be enrolled in Ballet and Modern classes, and must also be taking either Jazz, Hip Hop or Tap. Dancers aged 11 - 15 are invited to audition for the Junior Company; those 16 and up may audition for Senior Company.
